Frankenweenie (2012)

Hey readers,

It has been a little while since I did this Tuesday feature, but there are two movies hitting Blu-ray today that bombed majorly at the box office and it was a real shame because they were both very good. First up is Dredd, a high-octane thrill ride that was surprisingly entertaining for a movie that was dumped into theaters in September. Dredd packs a stunning visual style which I’m sure will look great on your HD TV and features one hell of a performance from Karl Urban as the growling Judge Dredd. If you’re a comic book fan, the film is a must-see. One cool special feature is “Mega City Masters: 35 Years of Judge Dredd,” which will make the die hard fans wild with delight. After you’ve had your fill of Dredd‘s blood and guts action, lighten things up with Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, which is one of the strongest animated films of the year. A return to form for Mr. Burton, Frankenweenie is a real treat for fans of the classic Universal Studios monsters and a heartwarming story for any pet owner. It also happens to be very funny, creepy, and relentlessly clever. As far as features go, check out the “Making Of” feature on Frankenweenie, which dives into how they brought those wonderful characters to life.

  1. It’s funny that you mention Dredd because I’ve noticed (recently) that it’s got a great critical response. But the box office is just dreadful (GET IT?!?! DREAD! sorry, horrible pun, but true) So now I’m completely curious about it.

And I’ve always been curious about Frankenweenie, although the awesomenocity of ParaNorman makes me apprehensive about it. Nothing against Frankenweenie, but I don’t want anything to potentially diminish my love of ParaNorman.

    • Haha John I think you’ll enjoy Dredd. It has a great visual style and plenty of action to keep you hooked. The ending is a bit of a letdown but I’d like to see them do another one.

As far as Frankenweenie goes, I think I liked it a bit more than ParaNorman and I loved the hell out of ParaNorman. They’d make a great Friday night double feature. Plus, if you like dogs, you’re going to really dig Frankenweenie. Plus, it i just nice to know that Tim Burton is still capable of making good movies.

  2. I need to get around to watching Dredd, everyone tells me its a lot of fun. I enjoyed Frankenweenie, it was a cute little film.

    • Dredd definitely has the action and a really unique visual style. If you’ve got a Blu-ray player, you are gonna love it. Glad to hear you enjoyed Frankenweenie too. I just loved Victor and Sparky. I do hope more people get around to seeing it.
